“All who know the pure product and use it with understanding come to respect the essential oils. One cannot but admire their ability to operate effectively not only on the cellular, physical level, but in the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic areas of our lives also. If anything in this world is holistic, it is essential oils.”
-Valerie Ann Worwood, aromatherapist and author of The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy
Do you know just how incredibly amazing and therapeutic essential oils can be? I didn’t. Recently, though, I’ve learned enough about the science of aromatherapy that I’m entirely convinced I now need to be on a mission to spread the truth about this to word to the whole wide world, about just how much essential oils can improve your health and change your life. Now that I’ve been using them on a daily basis, for a zillion different purposes, I can’t believe I ever lived without them!
And I can’t wait to share the everyday oils that I use in my home with you.
The Basics
There’s 10 essential oils in particular that have in my stash, which I use at least one of every single day. They are:
- Peppermint
- Lavender
- Lemon
- Frankincense
- Thieves
- Valor
- Purification
- Peace & Calming
- Joy
- PanAway
Some of these are single essential oils, and some are specially-formulated synergistic blends of essential oils, so they contain a variety of pure oils that work together for many different purposes.
All of these oils, plus a home diffuser and lots of other goodies, came in the very first therapeutic essential oils purchase I ever made—the Premium Starter Kit from Young Living essential oils.
Now that essential oils are such a big part of my life, I want to share what I’ve learned by studying and using each of these everyday oils, one by one, by introducing each of them to you. And also, by giving you a chance to win them with a giveaway for each one! (Scroll down a bit if you just want to get to that part.)
Everyday Essential Oils: Lavender
This week’s featured oil is lovely, luscious Lavender!
Recently, I got to visit the Young Living lavender farm in Mona, Utah—and let me tell you, it was incredible. I saw over a million little baby lavender plants being tended to by the hands of the farmers in the greenhouses (they even let me plant one in the fields myself!), I drank the water running off of the steam distillery machines where the oils were being produced, and I even got to frolic around in the delicious-smelling lavender fields! Here’s my friend Stephanie from Good Girl Gone Green and I jumping for lavender joy. 🙂
Lavender can be used for seriously almost anything. I don’t know of any other oil that’s more versatile! When I get questions in my essential oil group, I like to tell people, “When in doubt, use Lavender!” because that’s what I do! Here’s just a few basic suggested uses.
- Soothe minor burns by applying 2–3 drops to the affected area
- Rub on dry or chapped skin to moisturize the affected area
- Add a few drops to a cotton ball and place it in closets and drawers to scent linens and repel moths and insects
- Place a few drops on a wet cloth or dryer sheet to deodorize and freshen your laundry
- Rub a few drops onto your hand and spread over a pillow
- Diffuse Lavender essential oil to set the mood for your family or a social gathering
- Diffuse or inhale Lavender essential oil to calm your mind, body, and spirit after a hard day’s work
Lavender has antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating, relaxant, and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s used by aromatherapists to treat respiratory infections, cardiac health, skin conditions, burns, insomnia, nervous tension, and more.
My big huge book of essential oils, the Essential Oils Desk Reference, says this about the research on Lavender’s incredible healing properties and ability to relax and soothe your body and mind:
University of Miami researchers found that inhalation of lavender oil increased beta waves in the brain, suggesting heightened relaxation. It also reduced depression and improved cognitive performance (Diego MA, et al., 1998). A 2001 Osaka Kyoiku University study found that lavender reduced mental stress and increased alertness (Motomura, 2001).”

I love essential oils, specifically Young Living Essential Oils, which is why I signed up to be on Amy Kelso’s team, even though my family and I are currently struggling through poverty and severe health problems. I have a rare nerve disorder that makes it feel as though I am constantly being stabbed in my right ear- and it has felt like this every minute for the past three years. Last year I underwent a failed brain surgery and I now have a toxic liver from three years of many prescription medications that, on good days, bring the stabbing pain in my ear down to a dull roar. I use essential oils to help with the pain. Nothing takes it away, but using essential oils is one tool in my arsenal to help heal my liver and ease some pain while I run a fundraiser and hope for enough money to pay for my next out of state brain surgery, a round trip flight and a hotel for my husband to sleep at while I’m in the hospital for 5 days.

Lavender is my absolute favorite essential oil, it was the first one I tried and I fell in love with it instantly. I’ve tried other oils and I also loved them but lavender has always been o the top of my list, especially when I’m so stressed I just rub it on my hands and it gives me a very soothing and relaxing feeling. I also put some in my pillows and sheets because it does help me sleep better. I’m literally using lavender oil for almost everything that is how much I love it. It so nice to know there are a lot of people that enjoys lavender oil as much as I do.
Regards,
Dennis
