“All who know the pure product and use it with understanding come to respect the essential oils. One cannot but admire their ability to operate effectively not only on the cellular, physical level, but in the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic areas of our lives also. If anything in this world is holistic, it is essential oils.”
-Valerie Ann Worwood, aromatherapist and author of The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy
Do you know just how incredibly useful and effective and therapeutic essential oils can be? I didn’t. I thought they were just used to make things smell good!
Recently, though, I’ve learned enough about the science of aromatherapy that I’m entirely convinced I now need to be on a mission to spread the truth about this to word to the whole wide world, about just how much essential oils can improve your health and change your life. Now that I’ve been using them on a daily basis, for a zillion different purposes, I can’t believe I ever lived without them!
And I can’t wait to share the everyday oils that I use in my home with you.
The Basics
There’s 10 essential oils in particular that I have in my stash, which I use at least one of every single day. They are:
- Peppermint
- Lavender
- Lemon
- Frankincense
- Thieves
- Valor
- Purification
- Peace & Calming
- Joy
- PanAway
Some of these are single essential oils, and some are specially-formulated synergistic blends of essential oils, so they contain a variety of pure oils that work together for many different purposes.
All of these oils, plus a home diffuser and lots of other goodies, came in the very first therapeutic essential oils purchase I ever made—the Premium Starter Kit from Young Living essential oils.
Now that essential oils are such a big part of my life, I want to share what I’ve learned by studying and using each of these everyday oils, one by one, by introducing each of them to you. And also, by giving you a chance to win them with a giveaway for each one! (Scroll down a bit if you just want to get to that part.)
Everyday Essential Oils: Lemon
This week’s featured oil is light and luscious Lemon! Ohh how I love this oil. Not only does it smell absolutely heavenly—the most perfectly tart and delicate citrus that you can practically taste as soon as you sniff it—but it does amazing things for me therapeutically.
I like to diffuse it with some other of my favorite oils and it really helps to boost my mood and make me feel energized. And I use it around the house all over the place. I have it in my DIY hand soap in the kitchen, I put a few drops in my dishwashing soap to degrease and disinfect, I use it to clean the bathroom and the toilet—and whenever I have any sort of a sticky, gummy mess that needs help cleaning up, lemon takes it right out! Oh, also grease stains on clothes. I can’t be without this oil! Here’s just a few basic suggested uses.
- Use 1–2 drops to remove gum, oil, grease spots, glue or adhesive, and crayon from most surfaces. (This REALLY works!! Best “goo-gone” ever!)
- Combine 2–3 drops with water in a spray bottle to help cleanse and sanitize surfaces. (Or make an easy hand sanitizer to carry around with you!)
- Place a drop on oily skin or blemishes to help balance oil glands and minimize oil production.
- Add to water or a smoothie for a refreshing pick-me-up. (And you can use it in any sort of lemon-based baking or cooking, too!)
- Diffuse to help replenish your mind, body, and spirit. (Always lifts my mood and helps keep me energized!)
- Place a few drops on a cotton ball and put in the refrigerator or trash can to help eliminate odors.
Lemon has antitumoral, antiseptic, and immune-stimulating properties. It’s been used by aromatherapists to improve circulation, cardiac health, and memory, and even to treat urinary tract infections, anxiety, digestive problems, acne, AND… (wait for it) varicose veins! I’ve heard a number of success stories from people using Young Living lemon oil for this.
My big huge book of essential oils, the Essential Oils Desk Reference, says this about the research on Lemon’s incredible healing properties:
[Lemon] promotes clarity of thought and purpose with a fragrance that is invigorating, enhancing, and warming. A Mie University study found that citrus fragrances boosted immunity, induced relaxation, and reduced depression (Komori, et al., 1995).”

Love to use essential oils in my DIY personal care and cleaning items. I became chemically sensitive over the years so I try to avoid most commercial products. I feel better and breathe better living a more natural and healthy lifestyle with essential oils.

Once upon a time, I gave my skeptical husband a drop of peppermint in a cup of water. He was having stomache discomfort and the peppermint helped relieve that problem and helped him sleep better than usual. He now actually mentions the peppermint himself.
