I’m gonna be doing a fun new monthly tradition around here — linking up to all the good stuff I’ve read and recipes I’ve found! There’s so many awesome real-food-related blogs out there that I can’t wait to share. Here’s a shout out to some of the best things I read this month from them.
Links I Loved
Bread sure is getting a bad rap these days. Sure, that white stuff you can pick up at Wal-Mart probably isn’t doing your body any good, but have you ever heard of sprouted bread? Ann Marie of CHEESESLAVE describes why this traditional food is the only kind of bread she buys.
We’re all about learning the ways of traditional eating around here, but how much do we know about traditional… elimination? Yeah, uh, as bizarre as that sounds, our modern toilets can actually be a health hazard. I thought this was so interesting!
Coffee drinkers committed to a real food diet often feel pretty badly when they can’t kick the habit. But, with these 6 tips for healthier coffee drinking, you can ease up on the guilt. My favorite? #6: “Enjoy the heck out of it!”
I love finding ways to make more of the stuff I use than buy it. This recipe for homemade body butter lotion looks incredible, and doesn’t have even a speck of the toxic ingredients found in most skin care products.

How many times have you had major fail when trying to hard boil eggs? If they don’t crack and leak and make a mess all over the place, they almost always seem to get that gross-looking gray tint in the yolk. Well, I’ve finally found out how to make the perfect hard boiled egg, and now they come out nice and brightly yellow every time, and taste much better too!
Have you heard all the buzz lately about California’s Proposition 37? It’s a pretty big deal. Genetic engineering corporate giant, Monsanto, is throwing millions at a campaign against labeling their GMO ingredients in the food we eat. How messed up is that? In a world of goldfish crackers and cartoon-shaped “fruit snacks,” kids in public schools need all the real food nourishment they can get at snack time. Here’s a great list of healthy classroom snacks for kids, and why they’re a more nourishing choice.
Speaking of feeding our kids, here are some great tips for how to get a toddler to eat in a fun video post. I’m bookmarking this one for when I have little mouths to feed someday!
Is making sure you eat only pure, traditional, whole foods the key to better health? A controversial independent health researcher says that’s overlooking the bigger picture. Matt Stone, author of the groundbreaking book, Diet Recovery, thinks “most people focus too much on what they are eating, and too little on how their body works.” I agree. Learn more in Matt’s guest post about why fixating on nutrition minutia shouldn’t be your priority.
Recipes I Pinned
I’m crazy about the Pinterest, you guys. Are you on there? I’d love to follow you, too. Here’s a sampling of the tasty looking recipes that went straight onto my pinboards this month.
Grilled tomato basil fish. Marinaded in lemon juice and rosemary and topped with a flavorful mix of tomatoes, fresh basil, and apple cider vinegar, this one could become a staple in our family of fishermen!
Sour gummy stars. Made with grass-fed gelatin, this is a homemade candy you can feel good about giving to your family!
Kiwi fruit leather. You have to click over and check out the picture of this awesome creation. It seriously looks like a hippie-fied version of Fruit by the Foot! That cute little Gutsy girl is about to make me go and splurge on a big fancy dehydrator, the way she keeps posting all her amazing fruity treats that I’m dying to make.
Easy broccoli and egg breakfast frittata. I’m all about simpler breakfast ideas. Grass Fed Girl says you can cut servings of this frittata up and wrap them to go.
Best butter cake ever. Need I say more?
